Prof. S.S. Rajput earned his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi. He has retired as Chief Scientist from the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi.
Retarding Potential Analyzer: Design, Testing and Performance.
Abstract: The scientific satellite, SROSS - C2 was launched by Indian Space Research Organisation's Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle, ASLV. In-situ measurement of ionospheric parameters through Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA) was the CSIR thrust area. The RPA payload was placed aboard SROSS – C2 Satellite and was designed to meet the objectives of the mission. The ionization of the atmospheric gases occurs due to radiations from Sun. These ionized particles are collected through ion and electron traps exposed to the atmosphere and the current so collected have been analyzed. The payload was designed to measure both ions and electrons. The payload consists of five subsystems, viz, Ion RPA, Electron RPA, Potential Probe, Telemetry systems and Power subsystem. Design, testing and performance of the system will be discussed.
